Description
The 9" diameter sphere sits upon a flanging/expanding base, and sits at 13" high. It is composed of 2 hemispheres that separate, allowing the light bulb inside to be changed. Socket is old. Each hemisphere is divided into 8 sections defined by raised banding. Within each section there are 2 large faceted jewels, and 5 medium sized jewels. When the hemispheres are joined there's a band of large faceted jewels which separates them. There are 7 jewels in each section, times 16 sections = 112 jewels. The banding around the equator contains 20 large jewels, and there is one extremely large jewel at the North Pole. All together, 133 jewels. They are all there, did not notice any imperfections except a slight chip on the inside of the top jewel (not noticed, you would have to take it apart to see the chip). The interior pictures show how the jewels are attached to the sphere.
Unfortunately, I am at a loss to tell you the origin of where this was used, my best estimate would be at a pharmacy counter. For those who love jewels, this is nirvana. I believe the sphere to be pre-1900. If anybody can enlighten me on this, I would appreciate it.
