    Description

KM 6, two year type, issued for use in the Swiss Canton of Graubunden. Quarter dollar size billon (low purity silver) coin, with the coat of arms on the obverse.
Graubunden is the largest and most easterly of the Swiss cantons.  Its history goes all the way back to the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus.
The cantons of Switzerland were independent republics, until Napoleon forced them to unify as the Helvetian Republic. Due to constant revolts against the Helvetian Republic, Napoleon negotiated the Act of Mediation in February 1803, which gave the Swiss more self-rule and made several changes to the number and rank of the cantons. This new confederation ended with the invasion by Austrian troops in December 1813.
After Napoleon's defeat, the confederation splintered, until the cantons realized the benefits of unification.
